An ADHD coach is similar to a sports coach who helps his team develop strategies for winning the game and then continues to improve their performance, “while cheering them on as they win!”
- Identify strengths and enhance them
- Get organized
- Stay focused
- Identify realistic goals in school, sports and/or relationships
- Make better decisions with creative plans
- Manage time and keep to schedules
- Prioritize tasks to complete them
- Utilize effective study skills
- Substitute ineffective habits for more effective ones
- Improve self-esteem and manage anxiety
- Establish a daily routine for common tasks.
Research has shown that those with ADHD who are coached in these executive functioning skills on a regular basis are more successful in school and life.
ADHD coaching is about a partnership with a client, focused on helping the client develop an awareness of how his ADHD affects his ability to identify and reach his personal goals. It is an opportunity for the client to identify his strengths and then utilize them in school and in life.
My motivation for becoming an ADHD coach stems from my daughter’s diagnosis of ADHD in 4th grade. My background in education and management training aided me in dealing with here daily challenges. My goal was to help her find her passion and improve her self-esteem despite the frustrations and set backs she experienced in the school system and community.
Clients may be coached over the phone, with Skype or in their choice of environment. When working with younger clients, it is best to meet in person. Family members are an integral part of the process with younger clients. The coach, the child and the parent working together as a team are what equals success.
I am a member of The ADHD Coaches Organization (ACO) The Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA), and Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD).
